500 Million kilos of grapes are produced in La Rioja.
The breakdown of the products obtained is as follows:
- Wine: 70 - 72%
- Pomace: 10 -12%
- Lees: 3- 4%
20% of the pomace is dry pips at 10%. This amount is the equivalent of 10.5 million kilos of pips of which the Alcoholera de La Rioja produces somewhat more than half.
As well as the pips, other by-products are generated:
- Spirit Alcohol (Eau-de-vie)
- Vegetable oils from the pips.
- Bio-ethanol fuel; (Clean Energy)
- Natural tartaric acid
- Energy from the combustion of the plant mass with high calorie value, valid for
complementing other waste with lower calorific power such as EDAR sludge or mushroom waste.
- Ecological organic plant fertiliser.
